1. First names, last names

We at Aaron Teaches would like to start by introducing ourselves. Going in alphabetical order, we are Emi, Hana, Hillary, Ken, Lily, Rachel, and Tom. In the United States today, first names are generally used. While there may be some communities left today that still use titles such as Miss before people's names, we think such communities would be the exception, not the rule. If you come to San Francisco to see me and if you called me Ms. Hillary, people would think you were quaint or rather old-fashioned. When we are formal, we may use a last name, which would make me Ms. Aaron. However, I would never be Ms. Hillary.

Japanese students of English often use titles in front of first names. This is not correct. If you are speaking casually in American English, use a first name without a title. If you are speaking formally, use a last name with a title.

First names, last namesについて

最初にAaron Teachesのメンバーを紹介させていただきます。アルファベット順に、Emi、Hana、Hillary、Ken、Lily、Rachel、Tomです。現在、アメリカ合衆国ではファーストネームを使うのが普通です。名前の前にMissのような敬称を付けて呼び合う地域がまだ残っていたとしても、これは例外とみなされるでしょう。サンフランシスコで私のことをMs. Hillaryと呼んだなら、他の人は、あなたのことを古風で保守的な人だと思うでしょう。改まった場所で、ラストネームに敬称を付けてMs. Aaron と呼ぶことはあっても、Ms. Hillaryとは言いません。

日本人英語学習者が、ファーストネームの前に敬称を付けてしまうことがよくあります。アメリカ英語で気軽な感じで話をする時には、ファーストネームに敬称を付けないで話す方がよいでしょう。改まって話をする場合には、ラストネームに敬称を付けます。

2. Japanese learners and progress in English

Student: Why don't Japanese students get better at English?

Hillary: That is a question that I am often asked. It is a difficult one to answer. The answer depends on who you are talking about. Some students actually make great progress, but most do not.

When you get right down to it, learning a language is hard work. Those posters with the beautiful people advertising English conversation do not tell the whole story. In fact, they don't tell much of the story. Spending your money on English conversation lessons is no help if you don't study.

If you are talking about adults, people who have finished their formal education, most Japanese adults who study English do make some progress, but it is not enough to be noticeable or make them feel content.

The cold, hard truth is that learning a language is hard work. It is tough if you go abroad, and it is tough if you learn in your own country. You really need to study and practice a lot every day. If you do that, you would make great progress. Most people do not study or practice. They do not have the time, energy, and interest. To improve your language, you need all three: time, energy, and interest.

One other perspective is that most Japanese tend to speak very negatively about their lack of progress. Think of the glass of milk. Is it half-full or half-empty? Many people take the half-empty perspective. Instead of being pleased about what they can do, they are unhappy about what they cannot do. In conclusion, I would say two things: 1) There are not that many people who make great progress as a percentage of learners. 2) However, many people are better than they think or say.

Japanese learners and progress in English　について

生徒： どうして日本人学習者の英語があまり上達しないのでしょうか？
Hillary: 同じことをよく質問されます。難しい質問ですね。上達にはかなり個人差があります。英語力を相当伸ばしている生徒がいても、その数は多くありません。

結局のところ、言語の学習には大変な努力が必要です。美男美女をモデルにして華々しく宣伝している英会話レッスンのポスターからは、英語学習の困難さまでは伝わってきません。実際、この核心部分にはあまり触れていません。レッスンの時以外に自分で学習をしないのなら、英会話レッスンにお金を費やしても無駄になってしまいます。

学校教育を終えた社会人の英語学習者の場合、多くの人が英語力を伸ばしています。しかし、自ら満足できるほど目覚しく伸ばしてはいません。

明白なのは、言語の習得は困難であるという厳しい現実です。英語圏に行ったとしても、また、日本にいても、学習の大変さに変わりはありません。毎日本当にたくさん学習し、練習しなくてはなりません。こうした努力をして英語力を大きく伸ばすことができます。たいていの人は英語の勉強や練習をしません。そうするための時間、エネルギー、関心を兼ね備えていないからです。しかし、語学力を伸ばすには、この時間、エネルギー、関心の三つの要素が必須になります。

別の観点からも見てみましょう。日本人の多くは、英語力が向上しないことをとても否定的にとらえがちです。ミルクが半分入っているコップを思い浮かべてください。半分もミルクが入っていると考えますか？それとも、半分しか入っていないと思いますか？半分しか入っていないという見方をする人が多くいます。つまり、できることを喜ぶよりも、できないことを悲しく思うのです。結論として、次の二点をあげたいと思います。1) 英語学習者の数からすれば、英語力を大きく伸ばす人の割合はあまり多くありません。2) しかし、自分が思っている以上に力が伸びている場合が多くあります。

3. Newsletters and mail magazines (English only)

I was recently asked if I could tell the difference between mail magazines and newsletters?

I answered that they are the same. Newsletter is much more commonly in English, but email magazine is fine too.

A search for "mail magazine" and email on Google produced 102,000 hits, many of them in Japan. A search for "newsletter" email produced 561,000,000 hits!

I am not sure why Japanese use mail magazine. Maybe it is an extension of the word magazine, which is commonly used in Japan.

４．A Bad Day at the Beautician's
「美容院での最悪の一日」

Conversation:
Rachel: I went to get my hair done today. After my hair stylist was done, my hair looked so bad that I had to go to a second beautician's. I have never had to do that before.

Rachel: 今日、髪の毛切りにいったの。それが最悪でね、別の美容院へかけこんだわ。
一日に二軒の美容院をはしごするなんて初めてよ。

Hillary: That sounds terrible. One is about all I can handle.

うわぁ、それは大変だったね。一日に二軒も・・。私にはできないわ・・。

Commentary:

Rachelから一日に2箇所の美容院をはしごしたという話を聞かされたHillary。
すかさず 「One is about all I can handle.」 と答えます。
一日に1軒の美容院(one)へ行くことがHillaryさんにとっては精一杯のことだったのでしょう。

訳 ）「私にできることは、一日一軒の美容院へ行くことだけよ。(肯定的表現)」→「私にはせいぜい一軒しか行けないわ。(否定的表現へ変換)」

単に、「I can't do that.(私にはそんなこと出来ない)」と否定文でも答えられるでしょう。
そこをあえて否定表現を使わずして、否定の意味をかもしだす、
そんなところに味を感じていただける一文ではないでしょうか。

English only point:
A beautician is the person who cuts, colors, or otherwise styles your hair. The beautician's, or beauty shop, is where they work. We also say hairdresser or stylist and hairdressers's or stylist's. These are very common words in English, but Japanese students rarely use them.
