Beyond TOEIC
After you have gone beyond TOEIC in your English language skills, your next challenges are probably pronunciation and vocabulary. Culture may also be a major challenge for some people.

Pronunciation
One of your challenges may be to continue working on your pronunciation. You may be weak in one or both of two pronunciation areas: the little picture, the big picture.

The little picture is the separate and distinct consonant and vowel sounds. When you say think, people may hear sink. This misunderstanding would happen because you do not make the TH sound. Or, when you say royal, people may hear loyal. This may happen because you cannot yet distinguish L and R.

The big picture is the rhythm of English. Just like a piece of music, all languages have their own rhythms. If your first language is Japanese, you will have to use a new rhythm when you speak English. In addition to the rhythm of English, you'll need to learn to connect words.

Our goal for the Beyond TOEIC section of our website is to help you improve your pronunciation in both areas: the little picture and the big picture.

Vocabulary
If you are beyond TOEIC, your vocabulary is large. However, what you may now need is to develop your specialized vocabulary repertoire. You may need a psychological vocabulary so you could discuss closure, the ego, and passive aggressive behavior.

Or, you may need a scientific vocabulary so you could discuss the fault line, an aquifer, and the epicenter.

Or, you may need a medical vocabulary so you could discuss Hansen's disease, rabies, and scarlet fever.

Or, you may need a runner's vocabulary so you could discuss plantar fasciitis, Fartlek, and jack rabbit.

Our goal for the Beyond TOEIC section of our website is to help you develop a more specialized vocabulary in several areas.

Culture
If you have moved beyond TOEIC, your language skills are impressive. Your last focus may be culture. In theory, politics and religion are two areas that people in the United States avoid until they get to know others. In practice, reality is never quite the same as theory. With people you know, most topics are open for discussion. With people you do not know, it is generally better to avoid some topics.

Our goal for the Beyond TOEIC section of our website is to look at aspects of culture in the United States. We plan to discuss culture and subculture and summarize articles and books that examine culture and recommend other articles and books for you to read.
