Life in the world: Be careful
Recorded at Step Three audio

Part 1: Welcome to another of our Be Careful pages.

We have a few things that we would like you to remember:

  1. Don't get into cars with people you don't know.

  2. Don't go anywhere by yourself with people you don't know.

  3. Don't drink too much and lose control. Bad things are more likely to happen to you if you are not able to make wise decisions.

  4. Stay away from drugs. Not only do bad things happen to people who take drugs, but you can get deported.

  5. Be sure you find out where it is safe to go and where it is not safe to go.

  6. Don't flash your money.

  7. Don't carry a lot of cash.

  8. Don't loan money to strangers.

  9. Don't deposit cash into an ATM.

Part 2

  1. Watch out for things that are too good to be true. (Give me $20.00 now and I will give you $40.00 tomorrow.) If it is too good to be true, it probably is not true.

  2. Keep your possessions with you at all times. Don't leave your valuables out for people to see and take. Don't leave things on the table when you go to the bathroom in a restaurant or when you leave a classroom. They may disappear. Keep your possessions with you and keep them where you can see them.

  3. Don't hitchhike.

  4. Be aware of your surroundings in the daytime.

  5. Be even more aware of your surroundings at night.

  6. Just because people look honest does not mean that they are honest.

  7. Be alert with strangers.

Part 3
It is true that we need to be careful when we meet strangers, but the sad truth, in every country, is that more people suffer at the hand of acquaintances, friends, and family members than at the hands of strangers. This is true in Japan, in the United States, and elsewhere.

  1. Don't do silly things that you would not do at home. Some people get excited abroad and do dangerous things that they would not do at home.

Just be careful and have a great time!
